St. Sen. Sue Rezin wants to protect children from harmful addictive algorithms on social media. She introduced a Senate Resolution called the Protect Minors’ Online Mental Health Initiative. It urges the federal government to create regulations that protect minors from potentially harmful social media algorithms. Rezin says research shows that excessive social media use can result in negative effects on mental health, including increased rates of depression, anxiety, and loneliness. The Morris Republican says social media platforms are clearly designed to generate profits by prioritizing prolonged engagement, even if the engagement is harmful to young viewers. She continues saying it’s morally bankrupt for any company to pretty on a child’s lack of understanding for potential profits, and it’s the duty of lawmakers to make sure guardrails are in place to prevent it from happening.
