A $1 million donation from the Doug and Rosie Schweickert Charitable Trust will pay for two new playgrounds for children with disabilities. One will be built at the new Lighted Way Children’s Development Center on Chartres St. The second one will be built at Baker Lake adjacent to the new school. Lighted Way Executive Director Jessica Kreiser says the school’s occupational therapist, music therapist, speech-language pathologist, and physical therapist all decided what kind of playground equipment will be built for their playground.

Kreiser says the school will be able to do a lot at both playgrounds.

The city council approved an agreement with the school last night to build additional parking facilities for the playground and the park. 64 parking spaces will be added along Baker Lake and part of the Lighted Way’s new school. Playground equipment that will be built includes swing sets, slides, sensory equipment like musical instruments and a communication board that helps students who can’t speak.
