City of Marseilles requiring solicitors permit after issues with thefts at homes

You need to have a permit if you want to solicit anything in Marseilles. The city council approved updating the city’s solicitations ordinance last week after some previous problems the police department found. City Attorney Richard Burton says outside of charitable organizations, the ordinance requires people to go to the police department to get a permit and have a background check. Solicitors also have to avoid a house that has a sign that says “No Solicitors.”

If a solicitor doesn’t follow the rules, their permit could be revoked and they could get a fine. Mayor Jim Hollenbeck says the city wants to be ultra-carful about taking care of residents.

It costs $150 for a three-day permit and $1,200 for a two-week permit.
