If you’ve ever moved and forgot to get back a security deposit for utilities, the state of Illinois may be waiting for you to claim it. The Treasurer’s Office also gets abandoned bank accounts, unclaimed insurance payouts, and dead people’s money when their heirs can’t be found. Spokesman Eric Krol says the state’s holding on to $3.5 billion and a quarter of all adult Illinoisans are thought to have rightful claims. People last known to be living in LaSalle County have around $81 million waiting.
