Streator police chief asks for bicycle light ordinance

Riding a bicycle at night without lights on it could soon be costly in Streator. City Attorney Sheryl Kuzma says the minimum fine and court cost total under state law would be $175. Police Chief John Franklin is asking for an ordinance requiring a headlight and a blinking red tail light at night, because car drivers can’t see bicyclists very well. He says accidents are waiting to happen.

The City Council could take it up next week. Franklin says he’d have the police department issue warnings the first month to let people know.
