Red flag: outdoor fire warning issued for northern Illinois

By WCMY News Apr 12, 2023 | 5:49 AM

The National Weather Service has issued a red flag warning for most of northern Illinois from 11am to 7pm today. Dry leftover vegetation from last year, low humidity, and strong winds will make it very easy for fires to start and get out of control. Outdoor burning isn’t recommended. The city of Peru has issued an outright ban on outdoor burning except in enclosed stoves or burners. Even then, someone must attend the fire and be ready to put water on it in case it spreads out of where it should be. The red flag warning comes just days after a weekend with a few field fires in LaSalle County, including one west of Gladfelter Funeral Home in Ottawa, and a corn crib fire near Earlville.
