Marseilles candidates explain conflict resolution, I-80 visions, more

Two incumbent city commissioners in Marseilles believe they have good ways of getting to the bottom of a conflict. Gary Lewey says it requires involvement. He won’t settle it with an answer over the telephone. He told the audience at a candidate forum Tuesday night, he wants to meet with the people.

Jim Buckingham won’t take things lightly either. He wants to hear all sides and figure out the truth.

Some different visions for Marseilles as it reaches toward Interstate 80 came out. Ed Cavanaugh, Jr. is thinking big. He says big businesses by I-80 will help.

Michael Scheib says don’t think so big. He says a small city would have to spend a lot of money to get big developments.

Marseilles City Commissioner Bobby Kaminski says making the city a vibrant, growing, thriving place younger residents want to keep living in depends on what’s going on around it. He asks what’s LaSalle County doing to attract growth.

Candidate Melissa Small says young Marseilles residents need to be vested in the city. She says get them involved in the city’s politics in a small way so they can have pride in it.

Marseilles city commissioner candidate Brad Miller says it’s long past time to get rid of the old Washington School. He’d like to see it replaced with a retirement center or other housing.

That’s part of his answer about what to do to keep Marseilles attractive to different age groups. James Hanlon also answered it. He says pickle ball and fishing are good youth activities.

The candidate forum was at the Lions Club. Early voting continues through Monday next week. The traditional election day is next Tuesday.
