Joan V. (Penick) Bretag
1932 – 2023

Joan V. (Penick) Bretag, 90, of Ottawa, passed away on Tuesday, March 21, 2023 at the Pavilion of Ottawa, surrounded by her loving family.

Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 12 noon on Monday March 27, 2023 at St. Columba Church with Rev. Nicolas Wilson officiating. Burial will follow at St. Columba Cemetery. Visitation will be from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Monday morning at the Mueller Funeral Home in Ottawa.

Joan was born on October 5, 1932 in Hull, IL and raised in Hannibal, MO by Virgil and Bertha (Stolte) Penick. She graduated from Ottawa Township High School in 1950. Joan married Kaye Bretag on June 2, 1951. She was a long-time parishioner of St. Columba Church, a member of the Catholic Daughters of the America, and St. Columba Altar and Rosary Society. Joan enjoyed square dancing, sewing, cooking, playing cards, and spending time with her large family. She learned to cook and sew as a young child from her mother Bertha and she was well known for two of her late mother-in-law’s famous recipes, Sauerbraten and coffee cake. They were her and her family’s favorite.

Joan is survived by her four children, Michael (Chrisanne Kuenzel) Bretag of Wilmette, IL, Danny (Joanie Gayan) Bretag of Ottawa, Kayla (Pete) Weck III of Seminole, FL, and Julie (Jeffery) Grobe of Ottawa; eight grandchildren, Pete Weck IV, Ryan (Catherine) Bretag, Michelle (Steve) Christensen, Steve (Samantha) Weck, Scott (Angie) Bretag, Jacob Grobe, Kristina Weck, and Jordan Grobe; 10 great-grandchildren, including Allison, McKenzie, Steven, Dallas, Isabella, Finnian, Quinn, Faelin, Brooks, and Georgia; a brother, Jerry (Norma) Penick of St. Charles, IL; and a sister, Marylin Desserich of Hannibal, MO. She also has many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kaye Bretag; a son, Steven Bretag; a grandson, Christopher Bretag; a sister, Carolyn Penick; and three brothers, Franklin, James, and Fred Penick.

Pallbearers will be Ryan and Scott Bretag, Pete Weck IV, Steve Weck, and Jacob and Jordan Grobe.

Memorials may be directed to the family for a memorial to be designated at a later date.
