Six license plate reading cameras will be installed at entrances to the city of LaSalle. The city council unanimously approved a two-year contract with Flock Safety Monday. Police Chief Mike Smudzinski says the cameras will be a good tool for investigations. The cameras take pictures of license plates and run them through a criminal database. If the plate doesn’t return anything, the footage is permanently deleted after thirty days. Smudzinski says there’s a $750 instillation fee for installing the cameras on state roads and a $250 fee for local roads. He also says if the city doesn’t like the system they don’t have to renew the contract. Each camera costs $2,500.
