The 2023 Starved Rock Country Community Foundation’s Little Ambassador of the Year is 3-year old Bennett Essman. The foundation says like most kids, Bennett’s life was locked down in 2020 because of the COVID-19 pandemic. This could have caused a speech delay Bennett was suffering from. His parents Katie and Bryan say he was only speaking five words to express complete thoughts after turning a year old. Through the community foundation, Bennett was able to get help with his speech and can now talk in full sentences. Katie and Bryan Essman say they are so thankful that a local provider could help their son. They also hope other families will consider free screenings at the center after her their son’s story. Bennett now goes to Deer Park preschool part time where he will receive therapy until no longer needed.
