Peru discussing reactivating credit card fee for bill payments

By WCMY News Mar 1, 2023 | 5:37 AM

Peru residents who pay bills with a credit card could be charged a fee again. The city stopped charging a 1.5% fee on credit card payments in 2020 because city hall was closed at the beginning of the pandemic. Because of increasing merchant fees the city has to pay, the city council is discussing reactivating the fee. Finance Officer Tracy Mitchell says residents can pay with cash, check, or through an automatic withdrawal system so they don’t have to pay with a credit card.

She is reminding residents that three other options are available.

The city also discussed making the 1.5% fee a 3% fee. Mayor Ken Kolowski says it makes sense because other cities in the area are doing it and the city is paying a lot in merchant fees. The fee could be reactivated if the city council approves a new ordinance. No action was taken at the meeting.
