Cong. LaHood says give states incentive to go after unemployment insurance fraud

Cong. Darin LaHood says it’s past time to go after unemployment insurance fraud that ran rampant during the pandemic. He told the House Ways and Means Committee yesterday, Democrats just let it go while they were in the majority. A federal bill would encourage states to go after people who made false claims, often while impersonating others.

The statute of limitations on the fraud would be ten years instead of five. LaHood says states could use some of the recovered money to hire prosecutors and modernize their unemployment systems to prevent fraud. He says some needed improvements would keep unemployment payments from going to the imprisoned and the dead.
