The Illinois State Fire Marshal’s Office says a cooking container that was left on a burner of a stove top caused a fire that killed two people in Ottawa last year. Fire Chief Brian Bressner says firefighters found a woman and a child unresponsive in the 1500 block of Sycamore St. after they were called Christmas Eve morning. The two later died after being taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital. Bressner says firefighters found damaged smoke detectors in the apartment after the fire was out. It’s not known if they were working at the time.
