Sen. Duckworth reintroduces bill to ban race based internments

A bill to prevent internment of people based on their race or nationality is being introduced in Congress again. Sen. Tammy Duckworth is one of the co-sponsors of the Korematsu-Takai Civil Liberties Protection Act. It’s named for Fred Korematsu who tried to fight his internment during World War II in court. And it’s named for the late Cong. Mark Takai of Hawaii who worked on the issue.

A statement from Duckworth says a 1971 law repudiated the legal framework the federal government used to detain Japanese-Americans. But she says that law doesn’t specifically prohibit race based internments.
