In Local Sports, in high school girls hoops, Sandwich pulled out a win over Morris 36-35, Lasalle-Peru fell to Sycamore 55-29, and Seneca won over St. Bede 58-57. Kennedy Hartwig led with 28 for the Irish. In high school boys hoops action, Earlville beat Somonauk 69-51, Mendota fell to Newman Central Catholic 66-46, Coal City defeated Streator 65-57, Lasalle-Peru pulled out a win over Sycamore 44-39, and Seneca won over Beecher 73-66 in triple overtime. In other local sports, the Shepherd 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams picked up wins over Lasalle. The 7th grade won in two sets Meredith Waldron led with nine points, Lanie Allen added four points and four assists. The 8th grade won in three sets. Piper Lewis led with 13 points and a one kill and Chloe Carmona added 10 points. 

>>Bulls Burn Out After Hot Start

(Chicago, IL)  —  The Chicago Bulls blew an early 19-point lead en route to a 108-103 loss to the Los Angeles Clippers at the United Center.  DeMar DeRozan missed a go-ahead shot with 36 seconds left in regulation, and Zach LaVine turned the ball over on Chicago’s final meaningful possession.  Nikola Vucevic had 23 points and 14 boards in the losing effort.  The Bulls are in 11th place in the Eastern Conference with a 23-and-27 record.  Chicago hosts Charlotte tomorrow night.

>>Illini Dominate Nebraska In Second Half

(Champaign, IL)  —  The number-25 Illinois Fighting Illini stymied the Nebraska Cornhuskers in the second half of a 72-56 win at the State Farm Center.  After leading by just one at halftime, the Illini held the Huskers to just 19 points in the second half to take control of the contest.  Matthew Mayer led the way with 16 points as Illinois improved to 16-and-6 overall and 7-and-4 in the Big Ten.  The Illini visit Iowa on Saturday.

>>Wildcats Fall To Iowa

(Iowa City, IA)  —  Northwestern’s three-game winning streak is coming to an end following an 86-70 loss to the Iowa Hawkeyes at Carver-Hawkeye Arena.  The Wildcats went blow-for-blow with Iowa in the first half before being outscored by 16 in the second.  Boo Buie poured in 20 points in the losing effort.  Northwestern fell to 15-and-6 overall and 6-and-4 in the Big Ten.  The Wildcats host Michigan tomorrow night.

(Undated)  —  In other college hoops action yesterday, DePaul lost to number-23 UConn 90-76,and Northern Illinois beat Western Michigan 73-59.  Tonight, Bradley hosts Southern Illinois, Illinois State welcomes UIC.

>>Former Cubs OF Fowler Announces Retirement

(Undated)  —  A member of the 2016 Chicago Cubs is hanging up his glove.  Dexter Fowler has announced his retirement after 14 years in the Majors, including two seasons with the Cubs.  Fowler was selected for his lone All-Star appearance in 2016, which is the same year he won the World Series with Chicago.  Fowler led off Game 7 of that World Series with a home run off Corey Kluber, and he hit .261 with 30 home runs and 94 RBI in 281 games with the Cubs. 

>>Vandersloot Leaving Sky

(Chicago, IL)  —  The Chicago Sky are losing another All-Star.  Free agent Courtney Vandersloot announced yesterday that she has decided to find a new organization to play for in 2023.  The four-time All-Star spent the past 12 seasons with Chicago, helping the team win the WNBA Championship in 2021.  She scored 11-point-eight points per game to go along with six-and-a-half assists last season.  The news comes less than a week after Candace Parker signed with Las Vegas after two seasons in Chicago.
