Peru mayor concerned about no obstetrics services in his community even if hospital reopens

Peru Mayor Ken Kolowski says SMP Health officials apologized during a Zoom conference call he and local lawmakers participated in yesterday. But he’s concerned that there won’t be obstetrics services if St. Margaret’s Health Peru reopens.

The hospital’s closure announcement says patients who had appointments after this Saturday at 7am are being rescheduled at the Spring Valley Location—except for maternity patients. They’re being sent to other hospital systems. Kolowski says the hospital officials said during the call yesterday that they probably wouldn’t resume maternity services at Peru, even if they can reopen it as a rural emergency hospital.

St. Sen. Sue Rezin and St. Rep. Lance Yednock were also in on the call, but their statement about it doesn’t say much about the discussion. The lawmakers say they’re asking SMP Health to be forthcoming with information.
