In Local Sports, tonight right here on 1430 WCMY and 93.5 FM the Marquette Crusaders will hit the road and take on Yorkville Christian. Tip is set for 7 with the broadcast beginning around 6:50. In other local boys hoops, Earlville rolled St. Bede 75-51, and Reed-Custer pulled out a win over Serena 52-50. Hunter Staton led with 18 for the Huskers. In girls high school hoops, Seneca beat Dwight 46-29, Streator defeated Henry-Senachwine 29-27, Lasalle-Peru rolled Kaneland 44-24. The Ottawa Lady pirates lost to Sycamore 46-43. Marlie Orlandi led with 14 and Kendall Lowery chipped in with 10 for Ottawa. In other local sports, the Ottawa boys bowling team lost to Sterling. The Pirates were led by Nelson Brandt with a high series of 638. Aaron Wiltfong added a 528 series for Ottawa. 

 >>Northwestern Upsets Illinois

(Evanston, IL)  —  The Northwestern Wildcats used a strong second half to upset number-24 Illinois 73-60 at Welsh-Ryan Arena.  The Wildcats trailed by five early in the second half, but they went on a 13-0 run to take control of the game.  Chase Audige poured in 21 points in the victory, while Boo Buie chipped in with 15 points.  Northwestern improved to 11-and-3 overall and 2-and-1 in the Big Ten.  The Wildcats visit number-19 Indiana on Sunday.  Matthew Mayer had 17 in the losing effort.  The 9-and-5 Illini are now 0-and-3 in the Big Ten, and they host number-15 Wisconsin on Saturday.

>>Well-Balanced Bulls Take Down Nets

(Chicago, IL)  —  Three players scored over 20 points for the Bulls in their 121-112 win over the Nets at United Center.  DeMar DeRozan and Patrick Williams both poured in 22, while Nikola Vucevic scored 21 and grabbed 13 rebounds.  The Bulls led by as many as 18 points and rarely trailed, despite giving up 44 points to Kevin Durant.  Chicago is in tenth place in the Eastern Conference at 17-and-21.  The Bulls visit the 76ers tomorrow.

 

>>Bears Rule Out Justin Fields For Season Finale

(Lake Forest, IL)  —  Justin Fields is missing out on the chance to break the NFL’s single-season quarterback rushing record.  The Bears quarterback was ruled out for Sunday’s season finale against the Vikings due to a hip injury.  Fields was injured in last week’s loss to the Lions and underwent an MRI, which found a strain.  The 23-year-old will finish just 64 rushing yards short of Lamar Jackson’s record.  In other team news, the Bears signed wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown to a one-year extension yesterday, and they placed Teven Jenkins, Michael Schofield, and Josh Blackwell on injured reserve.

 

>>Hester, Allen Back On Hall Of Fame Ballot

(Undated)  —  A pair of former Bears players are among 15 finalists for the Pro Football Hall of Fame.  Kick returner Devin Hester and defensive end Jared Allen were both named finalists for the second and third time, respectively.  Hester scored 13 punt return touchdowns and five kick return touchdowns while with the Bears from 2006 until 2013.  He also returned the opening kick of Super Bowl 41 for a score.  Jared Allen spent two seasons with the Bears, getting five-and-a-half sacks in 18 games.  The 2023 Hall of Fame class will be announced on February 9th.

 

>>Cubs Sign Hosmer

(Chicago, IL)  —  The Chicago Cubs are adding a four-time Gold Glove award winner.  The team signed first baseman Eric Hosmer to a one-year deal worth 720-thousand dollars.  Meanwhile, the Padres will still be responsible for paying Hosmer 39-million dollars over the next three seasons from his previous contract.  The 2016 AL All Star hit .268 with eight home runs and 44 RBI in 104 games between the Padres and Red Sox last season.
