LaSalle ordinance requiring lights on bikes already exists

It turns out that an ordinance requiring lights on bicycles in LaSalle already exists. At the last city council meeting, Deputy City Clerk Brent Bader showed the city council what information he had about creating the ordinance requested by Alderman Bob Thompson. The city council voted at the last meeting to create it. But City Attorney Jim McPhedran found an ordinance passed in June of 2021 that already requires bikes to have a front and back light. It focuses more on vehicles like UTV’s and golf carts but there is a section dedicated to requiring lights on bikes. Bader says the ordinance would have been found sooner but it wasn’t included in the code of ordinances online. Thompson wanted to create an ordinance requiring bikes to have the lights back in November because residents in his ward told him that the bikes were causing problems at night because they couldn’t be seen.
