Christmas lighting safety: don’t overload wires, keep real trees watered

Don’t overload wires. That’s some of the holiday lighting safety advice from the Ottawa Fire Department. Capt. Kevin Theis says wires can take only so much current before they get hot enough to start fires.

Don’t plug too many things into a power strip either. And always run wiring where it won’t get frayed because it’s rubbing against something or being stepped on.

Also, making sure a space heater has three feet of clearance is just as important when the house has Christmas decorations all around. The Office of the State Fire Marshal adds that candles should be kept at least one foot away from anything that can burn. And candles need to be put out before you leave or go to bed.
