In Local Sports, in girls high school hoops, Streator lost to Dwight 43-28. Charlee Bourell led the way with 10 for Streator. St. Bede fell to Bloomington Central Catholic 77-32. Plano defeated Morris 46-40. The Ottawa Pirates rolled past Lasalle-Peru 50-28. Grace Carroll scored 20 for the Lady Pirates. In boys high school hoops, Rock Falls pulled out the win 69-61 over St.Bede. In other local sports, The Ottawa boys bowling team lost to Kaneland last night. Nelson Brandt led the way with a 554 high series and a 209 high game. Robbie Burke added a 492 and a high game of 192.  

>Bulls Get Past Wizards In Final Minutes

(Chicago, IL)  —  The Chicago Bulls snapped a three-game losing streak with a 115-111 win over the Washington Wizards at United Center.  Nikola Vucevic hit a hook shot with under three minutes left in regulation to put Chicago up by one and give the Bulls the lead for good.  Vucevic and Zach LaVine each finished with 25 points in the victory, while DeMar DeRozan led the team with 27.  Chicago improves to 10-and-14.  The Bulls host Dallas on Saturday. 

 

>>Notre Dame Basketball Beats Boston

(South Bend, IN)  —  The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are back in the win column following an 81-75 win over Boston University at Joyce Center.  The Irish led by as many as 16 points in the second half and didn’t let Boston come within a single possession the rest of the way.  Cormac Ryan poured in 21 points in the victory.  Notre Dame improves to 7-and-2 overall with an 0-and-1 conference record.  The Fighting Irish host Marquette on Sunday.

>>Cubs Lose Contreras, Add Taillon

(Chicago, IL)  —  The Chicago Cubs are officially saying good-bye to a fan favorite.  Catcher Willson Contreras reportedly signed a five-year contract with the rival St. Louis Cardinals yesterday.  Contreras spent seven seasons with Chicago.  He made the All-Star Game three times and hit .249 with 22 home runs and 55 RBI last season.  In other team news, the Cubs reportedly agreed to a four-year contract worth 68-million dollars with free agent starting pitcher Jameson Taillon late Tuesday night. 

 

>>Pat Hughes Named 2023 Frick Award Winner

(Cooperstown, NY)  —  Chicago Cubs radio play-by-play broadcaster Pat Hughes is being named the winner of the 2023 Ford C. Frick Award.  It’s presented for excellence in broadcasting by the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum.  Hughes will be honored during the Hall of Fame Awards ceremony during Hall of Fame Weekend in July.  He’s the 47th winner of the award and earned the highest point total in a vote conducted by the Hall’s Frick Award Committee.  Hall of Fame Weekend takes place from July 21st to the 24th. 

 

>>White Sox Select Giants Prospect In Rule 5 Draft

(San Diego, CA)  —  The Chicago White Sox are adding some pitching talent to their roster.  The team selected right-handed pitcher Nick Avila in the Rule 5 Draft yesterday.  The Rule 5 Draft allows teams to draft players from other teams’ systems if the player is not on the 40-man roster and has been in the minors for a certain amount of time.  The 25-year-old went 4-and-2 with 16 saves and a 1.14 ERA at High-A and Double-A last season.  Avila has to stay on Chicago’s active roster throughout 2023 or else the White Sox have to offer him back to San Francisco.
