Oglesby plans to raise tax levy 5%; Commissioner Curran says it’s too much

At Oglesby City Hall, the plan is to raise the property tax levy 5%. The levy this year was just over $1 million. Commissioner Jason Curran thinks the city can get by with less and shouldn’t raise the levy more than inflation. Inflation is high this year. But Curran says the city’s increase topped inflation the last three years, so he wanted a smaller increase to bring four years of increases in line with four years of inflation that started when inflation was much lower.

Curran and the other council members talked about the options Monday night.

Curran says the city has had a surplus every year he’s been in office, but it keeps raising the property taxes. Mayor Dominic Rivara says the city needs to save money for big projects ahead including electrical substation upgrades.
