Sen. Rezin says SAFE-T Act changes don’t go far enough

Illinois Republican St. Sen. Sue Rezin of Morris says Democrats have done as little as possible to fix real problems within the Illinois SAFE-T Act. House Bill 1095 passed the Illinois Senate with a 38-17 vote Thursday. It’s supposed to add more crimes that would disqualify a defendant from being released from jail while waiting for trial. Rezin says judges are still denied discretion to keep the public safe because offense burglary aren’t covered in the changes. She says the bill falls far too short to address the real concerns from law enforcement officials, state’s attorneys, and the public. She says it’s embarrassing considering Democrats had two years to make significant changes to the act.
