In Local Sports, in high school girls hoops Seneca defeated Reed Custer 40-20 last night. Kennedy Hartwig led the way for Seneca with 16 points, Faith Baker chipped in with nine in the victory.  Earlville defeated Alden-Hebron 44-32 last night. Lasalle-Peru fell to Prairie Central last night 52-45. In grade school girls hoops Marquette Academy defeated Waltham 38-3 in the opening round of regional play. Hunter Hopkins led the way with 13 points for Marquette.  Anna Hjerpe and Kinley Rick both added 10 points apiece in the victory. The regional championship game will be on Thursday at 6:30.  In other high school sports, The Ottawa boys bowling team lost tonight to Rochelle. Leading scorer was Nelson Brandt with a 576 series and a high game of 220. Wil Znaniecki added a 492 series and a high game of 178. In high school boys hoops, Serena defeated Amboy 52-20 last night Cam Figgins, Braxton Hart, and Richie Armour all scored 13 apiece in the victory. Lasalle-Peru defeated Hall last night 56-38. Seneca defeated Morris last night 64-37. Paxton Giertz led the way for Seneca with 22 points. The Marquette Crusaders defeated St. Bede 72-38 last night. Tommy Durdan led the way for Marquette with 14 points, Charlie Mullen added 12 points and Logan Nelson chipped in nine points in the winning effort for Marquette. 

>>Bulls Visit Suns

(Phoenix, AZ)  —  The Chicago Bulls will try to stay hot when they visit the Phoenix Suns at Footprint Center tonight.  The Bulls have won three of their last four games, including a 114-107 road win over the Jazz on Monday.  Chicago is in 12th place in the Eastern Conference at 9-and-11.  Tonight’s contest gets underway at 8:00 PM.  In other team news, the Bulls announced yesterday that head coach Billy Donovan signed a contract extension with Chicago before the start of this season. 

 

>>Blackhawks Host Oilers

(Chicago, IL)  —  The Chicago Blackhawks look to snap their seven-game losing streak when they host the Edmonton Oilers at United Center tonight.  The Blackhawks were crushed by Winnipeg 7-2 on Sunday night.  Chicago is in last place in the Central Division with 16 points and a 6-11-and-4 record.  Tonight’s game starts at 8:30 PM. 

 

>>Bears Place Jackson, Mooney On IR

(Lake Forest, IL)  —  The Chicago Bears are losing two of their best players for a significant amount of time.  The team placed safety Eddie Jackson and wide receiver Darnell Mooney on injured reserve yesterday.  Mooney is expected to miss the rest of the season with an ankle injury suffered last Sunday.  Jackson will have to miss at least four of Chicago’s final five games after hurting his foot.  Chicago hosts Green Bay this Sunday. 

 

>>Notre Dame Drops In CFP Poll

(Undated)  —  The Notre Dame Fighting Irish are falling in the latest CFP Poll.  Yesterday’s poll revealed that Notre Dame dropped six spots to number-21 following a 38-27 loss against number-four USC on Saturday. 

>>Illinois Basketball Cruises Past Syracuse

(Champaign, IL)  —  The number-17 Illinois Fighting Illini earned a dominant 73-44 win over Syracuse in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge at State Farm Center.  The Illini led by just seven at halftime, but they outscored the Orange 43-21 in the second half.  Terrence Shannon Jr. poured in 17 points in the victory, and Coleman Hawkins had a triple-double with 15 points, ten boards, and ten assists.  Illinois improved to 6-and-1, and the Illini open Big Ten play with a game at number-22 Maryland on Friday. 

 

>>Notre Dame Basketball Takes On Michigan State

(South Bend, IN)  —  The Notre Dame Fighting Irish will try to bounce back from their first loss when they host number-20 Michigan State in the ACC-Big Ten Challenge at Joyce Center tonight.  The Irish lost to St. Bonaventure 63-51 last Friday to fall to 5-and-1 on the season.  Tonight’s game tips off at 8:15 PM Central time. 

 

>>College Basketball Roundup

(Undated)  —  In other college basketball action tonight, Bradley welcomes Northern Iowa, Northern Illinois visits Eastern Illinois. 

>>Northwestern Fires Defensive Coordinators

(Evanston, IL)  —  The Northwestern football program is making a massive change to its coaching staff.  The team fired defensive coordinator Jim O’Neil yesterday.  O’Neil was hired by Pat Fitzgerald in 2021, but the Wildcats went 1-and-11 this past season.  Defensive line coach Marty Long and wide receivers coach Dennis Springer were also let go. 

 

>>White Sox Finalize Coaching Staff

(Chicago, IL)  —  The Chicago White Sox are announcing their coaching staff for the 2023 season.  New manager Pedro Grifol will be joined by former Blue Jays manager Charlie Montoyo, who becomes the bench coach for the Southsiders.  Ethan Katz will serve as the team’s pitching coach, Jose Castro is the hitting coach, and Curt Hasler leads the bullpen.  Five other coaches were added to the staff as well. 

 

>>Illinois DB Wins Award

(Undated)  —  Illinois cornerback Devon Witherspoon is being honored for his strong 2022 campaign.  Witherspoon was named the Tatum-Woodsen Defensive Back of the Year for the Big Ten yesterday.  The junior had three interceptions, 14 pass deflections, and two-and-a-half tackles for loss this season.  Witherspoon was also selected to the All-Big Ten First Team alongside teammates Jer’zhan Newton and Sydney Brown.
