Sen. Durbin says bus service not a good substitute for canceled train routes

Senator Dick Durbin says bus service isn’t a good substitute for the train. He’s asking Amtrak to work with rail workers unions so there are enough employees to run train routes. Durbin said those things in a letter last week to Amtrak CEO Stephen Gardner a letter after the train company canceled morning train runs on the Illinois Zephyr and Carl Sandburg lines. Those go from Chicago through Mendota and Princeton and on to Quincy. Durbin says 5,000 passengers per month are facing considerable travel disruptions. Amtrak says it doesn’t have enough crew members for the lines, so it canceled them until January 16th and arranged for bus rides instead.
