Sports Report 11/14/22

The Bears gave up 21 points in the fourth quarter of a 31-30 loss to the Detroit Lions at Soldier Field.  The Bears gave up a go-ahead touchdown when Jamaal Williams plunged into the end-zone on a one-yard run with under three minutes left in regulation.  Justin Field ran for 147 yards and two scores, and he passed for 167 yards and two touchdowns.  However, he also threw a costly pick-six that opened the door for Detroit.  Chicago is now in last place in the NFC North at 3-and-7.  The Bears are at Atlanta this Sunday. 

In other Nfl action last night the San Francisco 49ers defeated the Los Angeles Chargers 22-16. Tonight’s Monday night football will feature a battle between two NFC East  the unbeaten Philadelphia Eagles and the Washington Commanders.

 

>>Bulls Get Rocked By Denver

(Chicago, IL)  —  The Bulls never led in a 126-103 loss to the Denver Nuggets at United Center.  The Bulls trailed by as many as 28 points in the loss.  Zach LaVine poured in 21 points in the losing effort, while DeMar DeRozan chipped in with 16.  The 6-and-8 Bulls visit the Pelicans on Wednesday.

 

>>Blackhawks Rally In Third To Beat Ducks 

(Anaheim, CA)  —  The Blackhawks got a late goal to storm past the Ducks 3-2 in Anaheim on Saturday.  The Blackhawks improved to 6-5-and-3, and they host Carolina tonight.

 

>>Fighting Irish Hold Off Navy

(Baltimore, MD)  —  The number-20 Notre Dame Fighting Irish survived a late comeback attempt by Navy in a 35-32 win at M&T Bank Stadium on Saturday.  Notre Dame took a 35-13 lead to halftime, but Navy outscored them 19-0 in the second half.  The Fighting Irish sealed the deal when they recovered an onside kick with a minute-and-a-half left in regulation.  Drew Pyne passed for 269 yards and four touchdown, and he added a score on the ground.  The 7-and-3 Fighting Irish take on Boston College this Saturday.

 

>>Fighting Illini Fall To Purdue

(Champaign, IL)  —  Number-21 Illinois is on a two-game losing streak following a 31-24 loss to Purdue at Memorial Stadium on Saturday.  The Illini gave up a go-ahead touchdown early in the fourth quarter, and they went down by two possessions after a Boilermakers field goal with a minute to play.  Tommy Devito had 201 passing yards, a touchdown, and an interception.  The Fighting Illini are in a four-way tie for first place in the Big Ten West with a 4-and-3 conference mark and a 7-and-3 record overall.  Illinois is at number-three Michigan this Saturday.

 

>>Northwestern Gets Blown Out By Minnesota

(Minneapolis, MN)  —  The Northwestern Wildcats managed just 206 yards of offense in a 31-3 loss to the Minnesota Gophers at Huntington Bank Stadium on Saturday.  Northwestern never led in the game, and the Wildcats were outscored 17-0 in the second half.  Northwestern remains in last place in the Big Ten West at 1-and-6 in conference and 1-and-9 overall.  The Wildcats are at Purdue on Saturday.

(Undated)  —  In other college football action over the weekend, Illinois State was crushed by South Dakota State 31-7, 

>>College Basketball Roundup

(Undated)  —  In college basketball action on Friday, number-23 Illinois crushed Kansas City 86-48, Northwestern took down Northern Illinois 63-46, Bradley lost to Utah State 84-62, and DePaul beat Western Illinois 86-74.  Illinois State beat Northwestern State 69-67 on Saturday  and Notre Dame snuck past Youngstown State 88-81.  Today, Illinois hosts Monmouth, Northern Illinois welcomes Purdue Northwest, UIC has a home game against Jacksonville State.

In local sports the Ottawa Dolphins swim team tied for first place in a 6 team meet this past weekend at the Illinois Valley YMCA.  Winners for the dolphins included  Gabe Marini  Cole Bressendorf, Ethan Farabaugh, Brennen Heaver, Griffin Sharp, Bo Weitl Elizabeth Hansen, Ryland Heaver, Finley Jobst, Lewis Kuiper, Clara Weitl, Quinn Wilkinson. In other local sports the Morris football team defeated Mahomet-Seymour this past Saturday 35-14 to advance to the semi-finals of class 5A. They will take on Peoria High School on Saturday with a chance to go to the state championship. The Sycamore Spartans also advanced to the semi finals of class 5A when they shut out Sterling 28-0. Sycamore will host Nazareth Academy on Saturday with a state championship game berth on the line.
