The weekend for High School football kicks off tonight on WCMY when the Ottawa Pirates return to the playoffs in class 5A and travel to take on Mahomet-Seymour at 7pm. Listen to Bryer Lehr and Issac Missel with all the play by play action.

 

Keep listening to WCMY on Saturday afternoon at one when the Marquette Crusaders begin their playoff journey hosting Morrison in round one of class 1A at Gould Stadium. Hear Bill Bernardoni and Andrew Evola with the call of the game. 

 

Other playoff games scheduled this weekend

Tonight in class 3A, Princeton hosts Peotone, Seneca is home to face Winnebago. In class 5A, LP travels to take on Morris.

On Saturday St Bede plays host to Forreston in round one of class 1A and in class 5A, Sycamore is home to take on Westinghouse.

 

Results in varsity volleyball

Marquette are class 1A regional Champions by beating their host Aurora Christian in three sets. 

Leading the way in the victory were Kaylee Killelea, Maera Jimenez, Mary Lechtenberg and Eva McCallum. The Lady Cru advances to the Forreston Sectional on Monday.

 

Newark defeated their host the Bruins in the Class 1A St. Bede Regional championship. Kiara Wesseh led the Lady Norsemen with nine kills, Bre Dixon added five kills with Kodi Rizzo and Addison Ness each adding 4 more.  Newark now advances to play Newman in a Forreston Sectional semifinal on Monday.

 

The LP Lady Cavaliers season ended with a loss to Rock Island in the Geneseo Class 3A Regional Championship.

 

In junior high girls basketball, The Shepherd 7th Grade team defeated Peru Parkside 16-9 to take 3rd place in the Starved Rock Conference Tournament. Kennedy Kane led the way with 10 points 

The 8th Grade Lady Rams defeated LaSalle Lincoln 42-13 to advance to the Starved Rock Conference Championship Game.

 

Elsewhere in sports

The 118th edition of the Fall Classic gets underway when the Houston Astros host the Philadelphia Phillies in Game One of the World Series tonight.  The Astros finished the regular season with the best record in the American League. The Phillies are in the World Series for the first time since 2009 after taking out the San Diego Padres in the NLCS.   

 

Last night the Baltimore Ravens beat the Buccaneers 27-22 on Thursday Night Football in Tampa.  The Ravens handed Tampa Bay its third straight loss as they improved to 5-3. The Bucs dropped to 3-5. 

 

The Bears are seeking their second-straight win when they visit The Dallas Cowboys at AT&T Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

 

The Blackhawks gave up a game winning goal in the final minute during a 6-5 loss to the Edmonton Oilers at the United Center.  Patrick Kane tied the game at five with less than four minutes left in regulation, but the Oilers buried the go ahead goal less than three minutes later. The Hawks are 4-3 and will visit Buffalo tomorrow night.  

 

Tonight the Chicago Bulls go for their third win in a row when they visit the San Antonio Spurs at the AT&T Center. The Bulls beat the Pacers on Wednesday to improve to 3-and-2.  

 

College football this weekend. 

The Fighting Illini head to Nebraska, The Fighting Irish of Notre Dame are at Syracuse, The Northwestern Wildcats are at Iowa and the ISU Redbirds travel to North Dakota State.

 

There is college basketball action this weekend, number-23 Illinois hosts Quincy today. On Sunday, Illinois State is at home against Wooster. Both games are exhibition contests.

 

The NASCAR Cup Series continues on Sunday with the Xfinity 500 in Virginia.  Joey Logano maintains the lead in the playoff standings.
