Low river levels troubling grain shipping

By WCMY News Oct 22, 2022 | 5:30 AM

Grain companies have challenges sending their goods by barge this fall. Curt Kimmel with “Ag Market dot net” says it’s been dry, so the rivers are low—especially the lower Mississippi River. Fully loaded barges are sometimes hitting bottom.

Train cars don’t hold as much grain, and there’s the returning possibility of a rail workers strike. Trucks haul grain, but diesel prices are high. If the fall stays dry, it could put more upward pressure on food prices.
