The White Sox gave up nine runs in the first two innings of their 10-1 loss to the Twins at Guaranteed Rate Field.  Davis Martin was charged with the loss for the White Sox after surrendering nine runs in one and two thirds innings.  Carlos Perez had two doubles and an RBI in the losing effort.  The Southsiders finished second in the AL Central at 81-and-81.

 

David Bote homered and drove in five runs as the Cubs crushed the Reds 15-2 in Cincinnati.  Bote hit a three-run bomb in the second inning, while Franmil Reyes and Zach McKinstry also went deep.  Adbert Alzolay collected his second win in relief.  The North-Siders closed the season third in the NL Central at 74-and-88. 

 

The Cardinals closed out the regular season with a 5-3 loss to the Pittsburgh Pirates at PNC Park.  St. Louis gave up four runs in the bottom of the fourth to blow an early 3-0 lead.  Tommy Edman had three hits and an RBI in the losing effort.  Matthew Liberatore was charged with his second loss after giving up five runs in five innings.  The Cardinals finished the regular season at the top of the NL Central with a 93-and-69 record. 

 

Week Five of the NFL season begins in Denver as the Broncos host the Indianapolis Colts on Thursday Night Football.  The Bears play the Vikings in Minnesota Sunday afternoon.

 

In NFL news, The man who built one of the greatest defenses in the history of the NFL has died.  Former Chicago Bears general manager Jerry Vainisi passed away at the age of 80 in Oak Park on Tuesday.  Vainisi became the Bears general manager in 1983 and spent four years running the team and led the team to its lone Super Bowl title in 1985.  

 

Over in the PGA, Sungjae Im will be looking to defend his crown at this week’s Shriners Children’s Open at TPC Summerlin in Las Vegas.  

 

Local Sports

Associated Press published the IHSA football polls for week 7.

In Class 1A, St Bede moved up one spot to #6, The Marquette held on to the 1oth ranked spot.

In Class 3A, Princeton stayed 4th ranked and Seneca stayed at #9.

In Class 5A, Sycamore moved up to the 2nd ranked spot and top ranked Morris drops to #6 after last week’s loss.

 

Streator were winners at home against Kewanee in tennis. Partners Syria Zuniga / Charlee Bourell, the team of Marisa Vickers / Franchesca Rodriguez, and the duo of Mina James and Maddie Wahl all won in doubles.

 

Results  in the quarterfinals of the Little Ten Conference Tournament in Volleyball. 

Newark defeated Somonauk. The Lady Norseman were led by Lauren Ulrich with eight assists, four aces, Bre Dixon and Kiara Wesseh each had four kills.

 

Earlville were winners over Hinckley-Big Rock. The Lady Red Raiders were led by Nevaeh Sansone with 10 kills, Hannah Pfaff added five kills.

 

Serena defeated IMSA in three matches.

 

Marquette cross-country was in Roanoke at the 9 team LWRB Invitational. The Crusader boys were led by Joe Amicon’s 16th place finish. The Lady Cru finished second as a team finish and were led by Maggie Jewett’s 3rd place finish and Morgan Nelson placed 9th.

 

Streator competed at Lake Mendota in cross-country. The Lady Bulldogs finished 2nd and were led by a 2nd-place finish by Abby Pierce. Ryan Seaton finished sixth in the boys race to help the Bulldogs finish third.

 

In Girls Junior High Basketball

Both Shepherd teams defeated LaSalle Lincoln.  The 7th Grade team won 18-17, Chloe Thrush led the way with 8 points and 13 rebounds. The 8th Graders won 39-14, Ashlynn Ganiere had 17 points and 6 steals for the Lady Rams.

 

Marquette won 29-22 at home over Ransom. Morgan Collins led the Lady Knights with 10 points.
