Elvis Andrus had a strong day at the plate as the White Sox beat the Twins 8-3 at  Guaranteed Rate Field.  Andrus went two-for-four with a home run and three RBI.  Lucas Giolito earned his 11th win after giving up just two runs in seven innings.

The Cubs bullpen blew a two-run lead during their 3-2 loss to the Reds at Great American Ball Park.  Keegan Thompson gave up two runs in the seventh and was charged with his first blown save, Brandon Hughes was charged with his third loss in relief after surrendering a walk-off double. Willson Contreras and Nico Hoerner each went deep in the losing effort.  The Cubs will send Adrian Sampson to the mound as they wrap up the season against Cincinnati today.

 

Juan Yepez hit a go-ahead single in the top of the tenth as the Cardinals beat the Pirates 8-7 at PNC Park. Albert Pujols and Corey Dickerson each had a pair of RBIs in the victory, and Chris Stratton earned his tenth win of the season out of the bullpen.  The Cardinals finish off the regular season with a game against Pittsburgh today.

 

New York Yankees slugger Aaron Judge is now the all-time single season home run leader in the American League after hitting number 62.  Judge broke his tie with Roger Maris after a homer against the Texas Rangers in his first at bat of the second game of a doubleheader in Arlington. Barry Bonds still holds the record for most home runs in a Major League season at 73.

 

The MLB Playoff matchups are now set.  The Mariners will open up the playoffs in Toronto on Friday.  The Rays will face Cleveland in the other AL Wild Card series.  Meanwhile, the Padres will begin the postseason in New York against the Mets.  The Phillies will meet the St. Louis Cardinals.  All four of the best-of-three Wild Card series will take place Friday through Sunday.  The Yankees, Astros, Braves, and Dodgers have first-round byes.

 

The Bulls overcame a 19-point deficit during their 129-125 preseason loss to the Pelicans at United Center. The Bulls host Denver on Friday.

 

 Results in High School Volleyball

Ottawa lost on the road at Kaneland. For the Lady Pirates, Reese Burgwald had 12 digs, two aces, Olivia Evola had nine digs, six kills, Ryleigh Stevenson finished with 11 kills and Alyssa Malmassari added five kills.

 

Streator lost at Wilmington. For the Lady Bulldogs,  Sophia Pence led the way with 4 kills and Ellie Isermann and Devin Elias each added 3 kills.

 

Woodland were winners at Seneca. Top performers for the Lady Warriors were Kaleigh Benner, Cloee Johnston and Emma Highland.

 

Ottawa defeated Coal City in Varsity Tennis, Emma Cushing and Layne Krug won in singles. In Doubles,  Rylee O’Fallon and Jenna Smithmeyer, the duo of Isabel Heimsoth and Emma Walker and the team of Mackenzie Eichelkraut and Mika Moreland were all winners for the Lady Pirates.

 

The JV also were winners over Coal City. Gabby Cooper and Zulee Moreland won in singles and 

Laurel Fusher and Perla Gutierrez won in doubles.

 

Streator won on the road at Mendota in tennis. Winners for the Lady Bulldogs in doubles were Syria Zuniga / Charlee Bourell, the team of  Marisa Vickers /Franchesca Rodriguez and partners Mina James and Maddie Wahl 

 

Streator won 5-0 at home over Coal City in varsity soccer. Brady Grabowski and Noah Russow each had two goals and Landon Muntz added a goal for the Bulldogs.

 

In cross-country at the Seneca Spooktacular, the Irish’s Austin Aldridge and Evelyn O’Connor  claimed individual first-place finishes. Logan Pasakarnis also finished in the top five for Seneca.

 

Marquette won 34-6 at home over Waltham in Girls Junior High Basketball. Leading the way for the Lady Knights was Hunter Hopkins.
