Yesterday in high school postseason golf

At the Class 2A Sterling Sectional boys golf meet. The Ottawa team season ended with a fourth place finish. The Pirates Drake Kaufman and Seth Cooper both advance as individuals to the State Finals.

 

At the Class 1A Riverdale Sectional boys golf meet. The St. Bede team season ended by finishing fourth. Other golfers who competed at the event: Marquette’s Carson Zellers and Serena’s Camden Figgins and Hudson Stafford.

 

The Lady Pirates Hannah Duggan and Caroline Cooney finished their season at the Class 2A O’Fallon Girls Golf Sectional.  

 

Ottawa defeated Pontiac in tennis. Emma Cushing, Layne Krug, Jenna Smithmeyer and Elly Kovash all won in singles. In doubles, Isabel Heimsoth & Emma Walker, the duo of Mackenzie Eichelkraut & Mika Moreland  and the team of Aubrey Sanders and Peyton Bryson  were all winners for the Lady Pirates.

 

The Pirates Soccer team lost 3-0 to LP at King Field. The Cavaliers were led by Brayan Gonzalez with two goals and Seth Adams single score in the win.

 

At the Little Ten Conference Soccer Tournament, Serena won big over Hinckley-Big Rock 8-0. Tanner Faivre led the Huskers with a dominating performance by scoring 6 goals. Hunter Staton and Richie Armour each added a score in the conference victory.

 

Also in the LTC tournament, Earlville defeated DePue 3-2. Diego Vazquez had two goals and Ryan Browder added a goal for the Red Raiders

 

Woodland won at home over Gardner in volleyball. The Lady Warriors were led by Cloee Johnston with 12 kills, Emma Highland had five kills, Malayna Pitte and Clara Downey each finished with four kills.

 

Elsewhere in Sports

Carlos Perez hit a go-ahead single in the bottom of the seventh to lead the White Sox past the Twins 3-2 at Guaranteed Rate Field.  Josh Harrison also homered in the victory, and Johnny Cueto earned his eighth win after giving up two runs in seven innings.  Liam Hendriks picked up his 37th save.

White Sox manager Tony La Russa officially announced his retirement in a statement released yesterday.  La Russa cited health concerns as the primary reason for stepping away.  

 

The Cubs had just two hits in a 3-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park. Hayden Wesneski was charged with his second loss after giving up one earned run and one unearned run in six innings. Javier Assad will start for the North-Siders against Cincinnati tonight.

 

Albert Pujols passed Babe Ruth on the MLB’s all-time RBI list during the Cardinals 3-2 loss to the Pirates at PNC Park.  The Cardinals legend now has the second-most career RBIs after slugging a two-run homer in the sixth inning.  The Cards send Dakota Hudson to the mound against Pittsburgh tonight.

 

The 49ers were winners against their rival the LA Rams with a dominating 24-9 victory on Monday Night Football.  

 

The Bulls open up preseason with a game against the New Orleans Pelicans tonight.  The Bulls were defeated in the first round of the playoffs last season.
