Last night on WCMY, The White Sox were eliminated from playoff contention following an 8-4 loss to the Twins at Target Field.  Jose Abreu and Josh Harrison each had two hits and an RBI in the losing effort.  Johnny Cueto was charged with his tenth loss after giving up six runs in five-and-two-thirds innings.  The Sox have lost eight in a row and are now 76-and-79.  They were mathematically eliminated from the AL Wild Card race when the Mariners beat the Rangers last night.  The South-Siders wrap up their series with the Twins this afternoon. 

 

The Cubs scored four runs in the bottom of the fifth to beat the Phillies 4-2 at Wrigley Field.  Christopher Morel launched a three-run homer in the victory.  Hayden Wesneski earned his third win while holding Philadelphia to one run over five innings,Manuel Rodriguez picked up his fourth save.  The Cubs improved to 69-and-86, and will send Javier Assad to the mound against Philadelphia this afternoon.

 

The Cardinals left 11 runners on base during a 5-1 loss to the Brewers at American Family Field. The Cards went 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.  Andrew Knizner hit his fourth home run in the losing effort, and Jose Quintana was charged with his seventh loss after giving up one run in five innings.  St. Louis drops to 90-and-66 with the loss and will return home to host the Pirates tomorrow night.

 

Aaron Judge is officially in the record books.  The New York Yankee outfielder has tied Roger Maris’ American League home run record with his 61st long ball of the season.  Judge went deep off of Blue Jays reliever Tim Mayza to give the Bronx Bombers a 5-3 lead in Toronto. Roger Maris previously held the record after hitting 61 home runs on his way to a second straight AL MVP in 1961. 

 

The Blackhawks earned their first preseason victory with a 4-2 win over the Red Wings at Little Caesars Arena. The Hawks host Detroit on Saturday.

 

Tonight on Thursday Night Football, The Bengals host the Miami Dolphins for a showdown in Cincinnati.   

 

The Associated Press released the top ten poll for week 6 in IHSA football.

In Class 1A, St Bede stayed at #7, The Marquette Crusaders held on to the 10th spot.

In Class 3A, Seneca moved up 1 position to #9

And In Class 5A, Morris remains number one and Sycamore climb up one spot to #3.

 

Results in post season in Varsity Golf

The Ottawa Varsity Golf team won the Class 2A Mendota Regional. Drake Kaufman was the overall winner with Jonathan Cooper taking 2nd. The Pirates now advance to the Sectionals in Sterling.  Other teams advancing are Mendota and the LP Cavaliers.

 

St Bede hosted and won the Class 1A Regional championship and will head to the Class 1A Sectional at TPC Deere Run near the Quad Cities. Leading the Bruins was Brendan Pillion who placed 3rd overall. Individuals advancing to the sectional were the Crusaders Carson Zellers, Serena’s Camden Figgins (who finished 2nd overall) and Hudson Stafford.

 

Streator competed at the Class 2A Geneseo Regional. Jaydon Nambo finished in 11th place, and Cole Park earned 13th place, to advance to the Class 2A Limestone Sectional next week.

 

The Seneca team finished their season at the Class 1A Watseka Regional. Kaleb Powell and Grant Siegel will advance to the Class 1A Bismarck Henning Sectional for the Irish.

 

The Ottawa volleyball team defeated Sandwich in two matches at Kingman Gym. Leading the way for the Lady Pirates was Ryleigh Stevenson with ten kills, Olivia Evola added 6 kills and 10 assists in the victory.
