The White Sox’s playoff chances are dwindling following an 8-2 loss to the Cleveland Guardians at Guaranteed Rate Field. The Southsiders went down by six early and weren’t able to chip away. Yoan Moncada homered in the losing effort, and Lance Lynn was charged with his sixth loss after surrendering three earned runs and three unearned runs in six innings. The Sox are six games back of Cleveland in the AL Central.
The Cubs scored three runs in the top of the eighth to beat the Miami Marlins 4-3 at Loan Depot Park. Patrick Wisdom hit his 23rd home run in the victory, and Keegan Thompson earned his 10th win after tossing three scoreless innings out of the bullpen. The Cubs will send Hayden Wesneski to the mound against the Pirates tonight.
The St. Louis Cardinals were shutout for the third consecutive game during a 1-0 loss to the Padres at Petco Park. St. Louis managed just two hits during the entire game. Miles Mikolas was tagged with his 13th loss after giving up just one unearned run. Jack Flaherty starts for The Cards against San Diego today.
College football tonight, The Fighting Illini wrap up their non-conference schedule with a game against Chattanooga at Memorial Stadium. Illinois is 2-and-1 overall after beating Virginia 24-3.
Tonight on Thursday Night Football, An AFC North rivalry gets renewed as the Cleveland Browns host the Pittsburgh Steelers. The Steelers and Browns are both tied with the Baltimore Ravens on top of the division at 1-and-1.
The Chicago Bulls announced point guard Lonzo Ball is undergoing arthroscopic surgery on his left knee and will be re-evaluated 4-to-6 weeks. Ball underwent knee surgery in January, but experienced multiple setbacks during his rehab process. The Bulls start the season on October 19th against the Heat.
The Blackhawks start preparing for the season as training camp opens today. The Hawks play their first preseason game next Tuesday against the St. Louis Blues.
The Associated Press released this week’s High School football polls. Class 1A Chicago Hope ranked 5th, The Marquette finished in tenth. The Crusaders will face Hope Academy on Friday – hear the game on WCMY. In Class 3A, Seneca also placed 10th. Morris holds the number one spot in the Class 5A with Sycamore ranking 4th.
Varsity Golf
Ottawa finished 2nd at the Aurora Marmion Invitational. Drake Kaufman placed 4th individually with Jonathan Cooper Seth Cooper Chandler Creedon scoring for the Pirates.
At the Tri County Conference Golf tournament at Wolf Creek in Pontiac.
Marquette’s Carson Zellers placed 4th overall. Casey Schearer, Ryan Peterson, and Daniel Hoffman also scored for the Crusaders.
Kaleb Powell led the way for Seneca finishing seventh. Grant Siegel, Keegan Murphy and Ryker Terry also competed on the day for the Irish. Carter Ruff led the way for the Woodland Warriors.
In the girls division, Clare Phillips led the way for Marquette. Julia Hogan and Addison Stiegler were the top performers for Seneca and Mya Wulzen led the way for Woodland.
Kaneland won the title at the Ottawa Invite in Girls Golf. Top performers for the Lady Pirates were Payton Nodland, Kendall Lowery, Kaley Schiltz and Calie Kolesar.
The Ottawa JV boys placed 3rd at the Ottawa Invite. Trennon Kammerer led the way for Ottawa.

Serena won 4-1 over Depue. Tanner Faivre led the way for the Huskers with 2 goals, Richie Armour and Eduardo Moncada each added a score in the victory.
Streator won 4-2 at home over Kewanee. Landon Muntz, Brian Huichapa, Brady Grabowski and Moe Bacon each scored a goal in the Bulldogs win.
Earlville defeated Indian Creek 7-0. Trenton Fruit led the way for the Red Raiders with three goals and an assist and Diego Vazquez had two goals and three assists.
Streator were winners on the road over St Bede in tennis. Winners in doubles were Syria Zuniga/Charlee Bourwell, the team of Marissa Vickers/Franchesca Rodriguez and the duo of Mina James/Maddie Wahl.
