Streator residents trash bills could go up

Streator residents trash bills could go up. Because of rising fuel prices, Waste Management in Streator wants to raise the price of the monthly trash bill for residents by 75 cents. That would mean residents would pay about $22.45 a month. But the Streator City Council doesn’t seem to want to do that. City Attorney Sheryl Churney says the company can negotiate the surcharge with the city.

She says an increase in surcharges was never mentioned when the contract between the company and the city was signed in 2018.

City Manager David Plyman says he will negotiate with the company and bring back an offer to the city council. The city could end the contract but Mayor Tara Bedei says doing that could be risky because the city could get a more expensive contract if they would go out for bid. Commissioner Tim Geary said he agrees.
