THURSDAY LOCAL SPORTS UPDATE

The White Sox went 0 for 11 with runners in scoring position during a 3-0 loss to the Colorado Rockies at Guaranteed Rate Field.  Dylan Cease was tagged with his seventh loss after surrendering three runs in five innings.   The Southsiders are now four games behind first-place Cleveland in the AL Central with a 73-and-70 record.  

 

The Cubs exploded for six runs in the first inning as they beat the Mets 6-3 in New York.  Yan Gomes and P.J. Higgins each hit a two-run double to highlight the big inning.  Drew Smyly collected his seventh win on the mound after allowing two runs, one earned, over five innings.  Mark Leiter Jr. notched his second save for the North-Siders who swept the series and improved to 61-and-82.  The Cubs return home to face the Rockies tomorrow night.

 

In other team news, The Cubs placed outfielder Rafael Ortega on the 60 day injured list yesterday after he fractured his left ring finger against the Mets on Tuesday.

 

The Cardinals starting pitcher Adam Wainwright and catcher Yadier Molina started their 325th game together yesterday, breaking the MLB record for most games started by a battery pairing.

 

The Cardinals celebrated the record-breaking night with a 4-1 win over the Milwaukee Brewers at Busch Stadium.  Wainwright earned his 11th win after holding the Brewers to one run in five innings. Nolan Arenado and Lars Nootbaar each homered in the victory, and Ryan Helsley picked up his 17th save. Miles Mikolas starts for St. Louis against the Reds tonight. 

 

Tonight on Thursday Night Football, The Kansas City Chiefs hosts The LA Chargers at Arrowhead Stadium. Both teams are looking to go 2-0 on the season.

 

Local Sports

The Ottawa Lady Pirates were winners against Coal City at the Deer Park Golf Club . Hannah Duggan shot a hole in one on a par 3 number 8 that went 104 yards.

 

Also at Deer Park, The Ottawa Pirates won their last home match of the season against Coal City. Jonathan Cooper led the team with Drake Kaufman, Seth Cooper and Alex Billings scoring in the win.

 

The Ottawa JV team were winners over Coal City. Leading the way in the victory were Colin Fowler and Colt Bryson.

 

Serena defeated Hinckley Big-Rock and Indian Creek in a triangular event at Indian Oaks Country Club. Top performers for the Huskers were Braxton Hart, Cam Figgins, Mason McNelis and Carson Baker.

 

In Volleyball, Woodland defeated Earlville in two matches. Cloee Johnston had one ace, four kills, four blocks, four digs for the Lady Warriors. In the loss for the Lady Raiders, Nevaeh Sansone collected five kills and Brooklyn Guelde added four kills.

  

Serena defeated Hinckley Big-Rock 6-1 in Soccer. For the Huskers, Tanner Faivre scored 2 goals. Richie Armour, Camden Figgins, Bradley Armour and Eduardo Moncada each had a goal in the win.

 

The Shepherd softball team won the Regional Championship beating Prairie Central 9-5 in Junior High Softball. For the Lady Rams,  Adelyn Russell pitched seven complete innings with eleven strikeouts, 8 hits and two earned runs. 

Leading the Lady Rams on offense was Ashlynn Ganiere going 3-3 with three singles and one RBI. The Lady Rams will move on to Sectionals in Bloomington to face Stanford Olympia on Saturday.
