TUESDAY LOCAL SPORTS UPDATE

17 teams competed at the Ottawa Invitational at the Deer Park Golf Course. The Pirates won the Championship for a second year in a row. Seth Cooper finished 2nd overall, Jonathan Cooper placed 3rd and Drake Kaufman was 6th.  Top performers for the Streator  were Cole Park and Jayden Nambo. Serena competed with Cam Figgins leading the way for the Huskers.

 

The LP Girls team defeated Sandwich at Edgebrook Golf Course. Avah Moriarty, Allie Thome and Maddie VanZuiden led the Lady Cavaliers in the victory.

 

Results in Varsity Volleyball

 

Serena defeated their host Streator in two matches. Paige Sexton had  4 aces, 8 kills and Abby Johnson finished with 5 kills and 4 blocks for the Lady Huskers. Devin Elias and Sophia Pence each had 3 kills in the Lady Bulldog loss.

 

Newark were winners at Aurora Christian. For the Lady Norsemen, Lauren Ulrich had 6 kills, 3 aces and Kiara Wesseh finished with five kills and 12 digs.

 

Earlville won at home over Mooseheart in two matches. Lexie Campbell, Mady Olson and Nevaeh Sansone led the way for the Lady Red Raiders.

 

Woodland won at Ridgeview. Cloee Johnson had four kills to lead the Warriors to the victory.  

 

In Varsity Soccer.

 Ottawa lost 3-1 on the road to LP.  Jorge Martinez, Michael George and Giovanni Garcia each had a goal in the Cavalier victory. Jorge Lopez scored the lone goal for the Pirates.

 

Streator won 7-0 at East Peoria. Noah Russow scored twice and Adam Williamson, Brady Grabowski, Brian Huichapa and Landon Muntz all scored for the Bulldogs.

 

Earlville held on to beat DePue-Hall 4-3. Diego Vazquez led the Red Raiders with three goals, Ryan Browder added a goal and an assist in the victory.

Elsewhere in Sports

Listen tonight to WCMY when the White Sox begin a series against the Colorado Rockies at Guaranteed Rate Field.  The Southsiders are three games behind the Cleveland Guardians in the AL Central race with a 72-and-69 record.  Broadcast begins at 6:30pm with the first pitch at 7:10pm on 93.5fm & 1430am WCMY.

 

The Cubs opened their three-game series with the Mets with a 5-2 victory.  Javier Assad collected his first win of the year after holding New York to one run over six innings.  Rafael Ortega and Zach McKinstry each hit a home run for The North-Siders who face the Mets again tonight.  

 

The Cardinals will try to widen the gap in the NL Central when they host the Milwaukee Brewers at Busch Stadium tonight.  

 

On Monday Night Football, Brandon McManus missed a 64-yard kick with 20 seconds left as the Seahawks knocked off the Broncos 17-16 in Seattle. Russell Wilson threw for 340 yards and a touchdown in his Denver debut. 

 

The Chicago Fire will try to extend their unbeaten streak to four matches when they visit Montreal at Saputo Stadium tonight. The Fire are in 12th place in the MLS Eastern Conference.
