The Labor day weekend kicked off with high school football on WCMY when the Marquette Crusaders dominated Chicago Christian 41-0 at Gould Stadium.  On 95.3 JackFM, The Ottawa Pirates came out strong on the road in the 2nd half to beat Streator 42-14.

In Varsity Soccer

Ottawa lost 4-0 to their former conference rival Sterling at King Field.

 

Serena won big over Sandwich 9-1. The Huskers Tanner Faivre and Camden Figgins, each scored three goals in the victory.

 

At the Manteno Early Bird Volleyball invitational, The Newark Lady Norsemen team posted a perfect 4-0 record to claim the championship. Lauren Ulrich finished with 45 assists, 18 kills, seven aces, Kiara Wesseh had 23 kills, 20 digs and Grace Thrall  ended the day with 18 kills.

 

At The 28th annual Twilight in the Woods Cross Country event in Seneca. Evelyn O’Connor and Ashley Alsvig led the Seneca girls team who finished 2nd in the girls division. Austin Aldridge finished 5th for the 4th place fighting Irish. Streator’s Kody Danko placed 2nd in the varsity boys race. The Ottawa Pirates boys and girls teams both finished sixth, the girls were led by Grace Carroll who took 10th place. Marquette’s Maggie Jewett won the JV girls’ division.

 

At the  Ottawa Invitational at Henderson-Guenther Tennis Facility of King Field.  The Lady Pirates finished third on the day, the team of  Emma Walker and Isabel Heimsoth, the duo of Jenna Smithmeyer and Rylee O’Fallon and partners Makensie Eichelkraut and Mika Moreland all had match wins in doubles. Emma Cushing and Layne Krug each finished 3rd in their separate brackets in singles.

 

Over the holiday weekend in college football.

The Fighting Illini lost 23-20 in heartbreaking fashion to the Indiana Hoosier. Notre Dame gave up a pair of second-half touchdowns in a 21-10 loss to number-two Ohio State at Ohio Stadium and Illinois State lost at Wisconsin 38-0.

 

Yesterday on WCMY, The White Sox took down the Seattle Mariners 3-2 at T-Mobile Park.  AJ Pollock and Elvis Andrus each went deep in the victory, and Lance Lynn earned his fifth win after striking out 11 and giving up just one unearned run over seven innings.  Liam Hendriks picked up his 30th save as the Southsiders remained two games back of Cleveland for first place in the AL Central at 68-and-67. 

 

The Cubs begin a home series against the Cincinnati Reds at Wrigley Field tonight.  The North-Siders enter the contest as the third-place team in the NL Central at 56-and-78, while the Reds are in fourth-place in the division at 53-and-79.  

 

The Cardinals managed just three hits in a 6-0 loss to the Nationals at Busch Stadium.  Jack Flaherty made his return from the 60-day injured list, but he was tagged with his first loss after giving up one run in five innings.  The Cards drop to 79-and-56, and they hold a seven and a half game lead over the Brewers in the NL Central race.   

 

The Chicago Sky visit the Connecticut Sun in Game Four of the WNBA Semifinals tonight.  The Sky are coming off a 76-72 win in Game Three, and they lead the best-of-five series two games to one.
