Results in varsity volleyball

Marquette defeatedPlano in two matches at Bader Gym. The Crusaders were led by Eva McCallum with six kills, four digs and two aces, Avery Durdan had seven kills, Mary Lechtenberg and Lilly Craig finished with five kills and two blocks each.

 

Newark were winners at home over Hiawatha. Newark was led by Lauren Ulrich with three kills, five aces and seven assists.

 

Serena lost at Earlville in two sets. The Lady Red Raiders were led by Brooklyn Guelde 11 points, four aces, 10 assists in the victory.

 

Somonauk won on the road over DePue.  Josie Rader had 9 aces and six kills in the Lady Bobcats win.

 

Boys Golf

Serena competed with Coal City and their host Morris at the Creek Golf Course. Top performers for the Huskers were Camden Figgins, Hudson Stafford,Carson Baker  and Braxton Hart.

 

Seneca played at the Cedardell Golf Club against Sandwich and Plano.  Top performers for the Irish were Kaleb Powell, Keegan Murphy, Grant Siegel and Ryker Terry.

 

Varsity Soccer  

Streator won 3-1 at Herscher. Nick Pollet, Noah Russow and Landon Muntz each scored for the Bulldogs.

 

Ottawa lost to Illinois Valley Central 1-0 at King Field. The Pirates fell to 4-2 on the season.

 

Streator defeated their host Coal City 3-2 in varsity tennis. Winners in doubles were: Marissa Vickers/Franchesca Rodriguez, the duo of Syria Zuniga/Charlee Bourell  and the team of Madelyn Wahl/Danielle Sterner for the Lady Bulldogs.

 

Seneca defeated Marquette and Ottawa in Cross-Country at Catlin Park. Ashley Alsvig led the Lady Irish in the victory. Grace Carroll placed third overall and Eva Heimsoth finished 5th for the Lady Pirates. Maggie Jewett finished sixth and Morgan Nelson placed 14th for the Lady Crusaders.

 

 

The White Sox were without manager Tony La Russa during a 9-7 loss to the Kansas City Royals at Guaranteed Rate Field.  La Russa missed the game with an undisclosed medical issue.  In the game, Gavin Sheets had two home runs and five RBIs, while Eloy Jimenez also went deep.  Lucas Giolito was charged with his eighth loss after allowing five runs in five-and-a-third innings.  The White Sox now trail Cleveland by six games in the race for the AL Central with a 63-and-66 record.

 

The Cubs gave up three runs in the sixth inning during a 5-3 loss to the Blue Jays  in Toronto. Brendon Little was charged with his first loss and first blown save after giving up all three sixth-inning runs in relief.  Willson Contreras and Christopher Morel each went deep in the losing effort.  The Cubs fall to 55-and-75, and they take on the Blue Jays again tonight.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals had just four hits in a 5-1 loss to the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park.  Tommy Edman hit a solo home run to give the Cardinals a brief lead in the third inning, but Dakota Hudson surrendered four runs in the bottom half of the frame and was charged with his seventh loss.  

 

St. Louis remains six games ahead of the Milwaukee Brewers in the NL Central with a 75-and-55 record.  Jose Quintana starts for the Cards against the Reds tonight.

 

The Chicago Sky look to even up the WNBA Semifinals at a game apiece when they host the Connecticut Sky in Game Two at Wintrust Arena tonight.  The Sky lost Game One 68-63 against Connecticut on Sunday.

 

The top tennis players in the world are facing off at the US Open.  On the men’s side, Rafael Nadal returned to action with a four-set win over Rinky Hijikata.   On the women’s side, American Danielle Collins ousted Naomi Osaka in straight sets. Venus Williams was eliminated in the first round.
