Tonight on WCMY, The White Sox begin a home series against the Kansas City Royals at Guaranteed Rate Field.  The Southsiders are in third place in the AL Central with a 63-and-65 record and they trail first-place Cleveland by five games.  Broadcast begins at 6:30 with the first pitch set for 7:10 on 93.5 1430 WCMY.

 

The Cubs blew a late lead in a 5-4 loss to the Blue Jays in 11 innings at Toronto.  The North-Siders held a 4-0 lead heading into the bottom of the seventh before giving up three runs in the inning. Mark Leiter Jr. was charged with the loss after giving up a walk-off single in the 11th.  

 

Nick Madrigal had three hits in the losing effort as the Cubs dropped to 55-and-74 and will go again against the Blue Jays tonight.

 

The St. Louis Cardinals crushed the Cincinnati Reds 13-4 at Great American Ball Park.  Albert Pujols set an MLB record by homering off of a 450th different pitcher in the victory.  Tyler O’Neill added two long balls, and Corey Dickerson also went deep.  Chris Stratton earned his seventh win in relief as the Cardinals improved to 75-and-54. The Cards lead the NL Central by six games over the Brewers. Dakota Hudson starts for the Cardinals against Cincinnati tonight. 

 

Over in Tennis,the first day of the US Open is officially in the books.  Tennis legend Serena Williams highlighted the opening day of the tournament with a straight set win over Danka Kovinic.  Williams next faces second-seeded Anett Kontaveit in the second round.  Americans Coco Gauff, Madison Keys, Shelby Rogers and Alison Riske also collected wins.  On the men’s side, Tenth-seeded Taylor Fritz was also ousted in four sets by fellow American Brandon Holt.

Results in Varsity volleyball

Marquette defeated Reed Custer in two sets. Leading the Lady Cru were Lindsey Kaufmann with 10 digs and 3 aces and Kaylee Killelea earned 12 assists and added 3 kills.

 

Streator were winners over Pontiac. Bella Dean had 5 kills, 5 digs,  Alexa Jacobs had 4 kills, 2 blocks and Ellie Isermann finished with 13 assists, 2 kills and 4 digs in the Lady Bulldogs victory.

 

Newark earned a road win at Sandwich in two sets. Lauren Ulrich led the Lady Norsemen with 12 assists, eight digs and five kills.

 

The Seneca golf team lost to Morris at the Creek Golf Course. Kaleb Powell led the Irish team in the losing effort.

 

 

Shepherd defeated Mendota Holy Cross 18-3 in Junior High Softball. For the Lady Rams, Piper Lewis got the win in the circle with seven strikeouts and allowed zero hits. On offense, Kendall Biba went 4-5 with four RBIs. Reese Purcell finished with two RBIs.
