In volleyball

Marquette lost at home to Lexington in two sets. Eva McCallum and Avery Durdan each had five kills, Lindsey Kaufmann finished with six digs in the loss.

 

LP won on the road at Princeton in two straight sets. Emma Garretson led the Lady Cavaliers with seven kills, Olivia Shetterly and Camryn Piscia each had three kills and two blocks, 

 

Streator were winners at Dwight in two straight matches. Emma Rambo finished with 10 assists, 3 kills, 3 blocks, 3 digs in the victory.

 

Earlville were winners at  South Beloit. Leading the Lady Red Raiders, Mady Olson had 13 points, three aces and Brooklyn Guelde finished with seven points, five digs, 11 assists.

 

Results in varsity soccer

Ottawa were winners at home over Roanoke-Benson 4-1 at King Field. Ethan Cela scored a goal in each half for the Pirates Evan Snook added another goal in the season opener win.

 

Serena defeated Coal City 5-1. Tanner Faivre led the Huskers scoring three goals in the victory.

 

Streator defeated Woodland and Lexington in varsity golf at Wolf Creek Golf Course. Cole Park led all golfers in the triangular matchup.

 

The LP girls golf team won at home over Sandwich at Senica Oak Ridge. Top golfers for the Lady Cavaliers were Allie Thome and  Avah Moriarty.

 

Big news in High School Basketball, the IHSA announced Tuesday night the approval of “experimental use” of the shot clock at regular season boys and girls basketball tournaments and shootouts for this coming season.  The National Federation of State High School Associations approved them last year. However, the IHSA currently does not utilize it in contests. The three point shooting contest utilized during the state series for boys and girls basketball has also been discontinued.

 

ELSEWHERE IN SPORTS

The White Sox left 13 men on base during a 5-3 loss to the Baltimore Orioles at Camden Yards.  Eloy Jimenez hit his seventh home run in the losing effort, while Luis Robert had three hits.  Dylan Cease was charged with his sixth loss after giving up four runs in five-and-a-third innings.  The South-Siders  fall to 62-and-61, and they remain in third place in the AL Central.  

 

The Cubs split their doubleheader against the Cardinals at Wrigley Field yesterday.  In game one, the Cubs held St. Louis to just five hits in a 2-0 win.  Nico Hoerner and Seiya Suzuki each drove in a run.  In the second game, the Cubs pitchers were knocked around in a 13-3 loss.  Adrian Sampson allowed five runs in three-and-a-third innings and was charged with his fourth loss.  The 53-and-70 Cubs send Luke Farrell to the mound against St. Louis tonight.

 

The Chicago Sky are heading to the WNBA Semifinals following a 90-72 win over the New York Liberty in game three of the First Round. The Sky will face the winner of tonight’s contest between Connecticut and Dallas on Sunday.
