Nelson Velazquez had three hits as the Cubs beat the Nationals 6-3 at Wrigley Field. Velazquez hit a solo home run in the contest, and Christopher Morel also went deep. Keegan Thompson earned his ninth win after holding Washington to just one run on five hits in six innings, and Rowan Wick picked up his fifth save. The 44-and-64 Cubs send Marcus Stroman to the mound against the Nationals tonight.
Cubs president of baseball operations Jed Hoyer said yesterday that the team won’t bring back Jason Heyward next season and added that he’s done playing for the rest of this season. Heyward was set to enter the final year of his eight-year deal next year that he signed with the Cubs in 2016.
The Cardinals take on the Rockies at Coors Field tonight. The Cards have won their last seven games, and they hold a two-game lead on top of the NL Central with a 60-and-48 record. Miles Mikolas will start for St. Louis tonight.
The Chicago Sky aim for their third-straight win when they host the Seattle Storm at the Wintrust Arena tonight. The Sky lead the WNBA with a 25-8 record.
In college football, The Fighting Irish are projected to have another strong season according to the USA Today’s preseason coaches poll. Notre Dame opens the season as the number-five team in the nation after finishing in ninth last season. Alabama was selected first, while Ohio State, Georgia, and Clemson round out the top-four.

Shepherd defeated Fieldcrest 16-1 in girls Junior High Softball. Addie Russell pitched three innings, striking out six and giving up only one hit and one run. Leading the Lady Rams on offense was Piper Lewis going 2-2 with a double, a triple, a walk and three RBI’s. Addison Stapleton also went 2-2 with two singles and an RBI.
The highschool fall sports season got underway across the state Monday with the start of official practices. Games for varsity football begin Friday August 26th with Ottawa hosting Plano and Marquette will play host to Aurora Christian.
