Bond set at $5 million for teen arrested in random Morris murder

Bond was set at $5 million for a 16-year old boy accused of murdering a Shorewood woman in Morris Thursday. Cortez Rice could face up to 40 years in prison if he’s convicted. Grundy County State’s Attorney Jason Helland says he’s not aware of any previous case in which someone so young was charged with murder in the county.

Twenty-five year old Beverly Lambert was shot twice in the back of her head. Rice allegedly stole her car. She had arrived at an apartment building to pick up a child under age two from a babysitter. Helland says the teen had been asking for rides and someone at the apartment building told him to leave.

License plate reading cameras helped police find Rice in Joliet about seven hours after the shooting.
