WEDNESDAY SPORT UPDATE

By WCMY News Aug 3, 2022 | 8:34 AM

The White Sox rattled off 14 hits in a 9-2 win over the Kansas City Royals at Guaranteed Rate Field.  The Sox got off to a hot start with three runs in the bottom of the third inning.  Eloy Jimenez went three-for-three with four RBIs, while Jose Abreu and Gavin Sheets each went deep.  Lucas Giolito earned his seventh win after holding the Royals to two runs on five hits in five innings.  The Southsiders now trail the Twins by just two games in the race for the AL Central.

In other Sox news, the team activated outfielder Luis Robert from the 10-day injured list yesterday.

The Cubs managed just seven hits in a 6-0 loss to the St. Louis Cardinals at Busch Stadium.  Yan Gomes had two hits in the losing effort, and Willson Contreras added a triple.  Keegan Thompson was tagged with his fifth loss after surrendering five runs on ten hits in four-and-two-third innings.  The Cubs fall to 41-and-61, and will send Justin Steele to the mound against the Cardinals tonight.

The North-Siders gutted their bullpen by the trade deadline.  The Cubs traded reliever David Robertson to the Phillies and sent Mychal Givens to the Mets yesterday.  The Cubs received pitching prospect Ben Brown from Philadelphia and right-hander Saul Gonzalez from New York.  Notably, the team did not trade outfielder Ian Happ and catcher Willson Contreras.  Both players will remain with the team for the rest of the season.

Also at the trade deadline, The St. Louis Cardinals acquired Yankees starting pitcher Jordan Montgomery in exchange for Gold Glove outfielder Harrison Bader.
