FRIDAY SPORTS UPDATE

The White Sox are back in action tonight when they host the Cleveland Guardians at Guaranteed Rate Field.  The Sox enter the game as the third-place team in the AL Central with a 46-and-46 record.  They’re three games behind first place Minnesota, and one game behind the second place Guardians.   

 

The Cubs return from the All-Star Break to take on the Philadelphia Phillies at Citizens Bank Park.  The Cubs are 35-and-57 and are in fourth place in the NL Central. Justin Steele starts for the North-Siders tonight.  

 

The St. Louis Cardinals continue the NL Central race when they visit the Cincinnati Reds at Great American Ball Park tonight.  The Cards enter the second half of the season with a 50-and-44 record, and they’re just a half-game behind the Milwaukee Brewers for first place in the division.

The Chicago Sky go for their sixth straight win when they host the Dallas Wings at Wintrust Arena tonight. The Sky have the best record in the WNBA at 20-and-6.  

 

The Chicago Fire will try to extend their winning streak to three matches when they visit Vancouver  tomorrow.  The Fire are in 12th place in the MLS Eastern Conference with six wins, five draws and ten losses. 

 

Over in the PGA, A pair of players are leading the way after the opening round of the 3M Open at TPC Twin Cities in Minnesota.  Sungjae Im and Scott Piercy each shot six-under par to finish the first round on top of the leaderboard.   

 

NASCAR is set to take on the Pocono Raceway for the M&M’s Fan Appreciation 400 on Sunday in Pennsylvania.

 

 

Football News

The Rams are receiving their championship rings for winning Super Bowl 56.  The rings feature the Rams logo as well as the Lombardi Trophy flanked by two palm trees to add a touch of LA to the ring.  Los Angeles earned their Super Bowl hardware after defeating the Bengals 23-20 on their home turf at SoFi Stadium back in February.  Receiver Cooper Kupp was the Super Bowl MVP.

 

The defending national champions in college football are giving their head coach a massive contract extension.  The University of Georgia announced a new deal for Kirby Smart that gives him a salary of just over ten million dollars for the upcoming season.  By the time the contract is up at the end of the 2031 season, it’ll be worth more than 12 million a year.
