A crucial Tigers error led to a pair of runs for the White Sox in their 4-2 win at Guaranteed Rate Field. Detroit outfielder Robbie Grossman dropped a fly ball with two outs in the eighth to keep the inning alive and gave the White Sox new life. AJ Pollock and Eloy Jimenez each hit RBI singles after Grossman’s error to put the Southsiders up for good. The Sox are in third place in the AL Central and trail the first place Twins by five games.
The Cubs blew an early five-run lead in their 11-9 loss to the Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. The North-Siders led 8-3 through two-and-a-half innings before the Dodgers struck for six runs in the bottom of the third. Mark Leiter Jr. was tagged with the loss out of the bullpen. PJ Higgins, David Bote, and Nelson Velazquez all went deep in the losing effort. The 34 and 52 Cubs return home to take on the Orioles tomorrow night.
Both Chicago teams will be represented at the MLB All-Star Game in Los Angeles. Cubs outfielder Ian Happ was named as a reserve for the National League team yesterday and will join teammate Willson Contreras, who was voted in as the NL’s starting catcher by the fans.
For the White Sox infielder Tim Anderson will start at shortstop. The All-Star Game will take place on July 19th.
The Cardinals scored a go-ahead run in the eighth inning of their 4-3 win against the Phillies at Busch Stadium. Dylan Carlson scored on Tommy Edman’s sacrifice fly in the inning to put the Cardinals up for good. Jordan Hicks earned his second win from the pen with Ryan Helsley tossing a scoreless ninth for his seventh save. The 46 and 42 Cardinals trail Milwaukee by two-and-a-half games in the NL Central race. The Red Birds send Miles Mikolas to the mound against the Phillies tonight.
Chicago Fire spoiled a two-goal lead in a 3-2 loss to Columbus at Soldier Field on Saturday. The Fire are in last place in the MLS Eastern Conference and will host Toronto on Wednesday.
The Chicago Bulls were blown out by the New York Knicks in a 101-69 Summer League loss in Las Vegas. The Bulls return to action against the Raptors tomorrow.
Over in the PGA, Xander Schauffele won the Scottish Open in Scotland.
