A police chase in Ottawa ended when a man drove his vehicle into the Illinois River Wednesday evening. Ottawa Police Chief Brent Roalson says an officer tried to pull the vehicle over near the area of W. Norris Drive and Canal St.
But when the officer turned on the police lights, the vehicle sped off. The vehicle turned onto LaSalle Street, over Veteran’s Memorial Bridge, before turning into Allen Park and going into the river.
This is why the Ottawa Fire Department and dive teams were called this morning. The man was pronounced dead after dive teams pulled him out. He was the only person in the car. Roalson says an autopsy will be completed Thursday. Additional details will be made available as the investigation continues.
