The White Sox fell 4-3 to the Angels in Anaheim. Reynaldo Lopez took the loss in relief after Lucas Giolito allowed two runs over six innings for the no-decision. Gavin Sheets had a pair of hits and Jose Abreu added an RBI double for the White Sox, who lost five of their last six games.
The Cubs are returning home to host the Reds tonight at Wrigley Field. The Cubs come off a series win over the Cardinals and have won three of their last five games. The North-Siders will send right-hander Keegan Thompson to the mound for the series opener.
Adam Wainwright pitched seven scoreless innings and struck out nine as the Cardinals crushed the Marlins 9-0 in St. Louis. Juan Yepez homered twice and Paul Goldschmidt went 4-for-4 with a home run for the Cards, who are 42-and-34.
The Cardinals and Marlins will continue the series this evening. Dakota Hudson is set to take the mound for St. Louis.
MLB is laying down the law in response to Sunday’s bench-clearing brawl in Anaheim. Twelve members of the Los Angeles Angels and Seattle Mariners have received discipline for their roles in the on-field incident. Angels interim manager Phil Nevin received a 10-game suspension for the intentional throwing by pitcher Andrew Wantz while warnings were in place.
Mariners outfielder Jesse Winker is being suspended seven games for actions that caused the incident and for fighting. The league also disciplined several others with five-game, three-game, two-game, and one-game suspensions.
Some results from the opening day at Wimbledon. On the men’s side, top-seeded Novak Djokovic, Casper Ruud and 19-year-old Carlos Al-caraz were among the early winners. On the women’s side, seventh-seeded Danielle Collins was upset in three sets by Marie Bouzkova.
The Blackhawks officially announced Luke Richardson as the franchise’s 40th head coach in team history. Richardson spent the past four seasons as an assistant coach with the Canadiens. The 53-year-old was also a defenseman for the Oilers and Flyers over 21 years in the NHL.
The USFL is planning another season. The League Board of Directors confirmed there will be a second season to the Sports Business Journal. The USFL’s first championship game is this weekend in Canton, Ohio.
The football world is mourning the loss of an icon. Former Denver Bronco Marlin Briscoe, who became the first Black starting quarterback in the American Football League, passed away at the age of 76.
