The White Sox beat the Orioles 4-3 yesterday afternoon at Guaranteed Rate Field. Dylan Cease racked up 13 strikeouts and allowed only one run in seven innings of work. Kendall Graveman secured his third save for the Sox, who improved to 34-and-37. Gavin Sheets had a pair of hits and homered in the win.
The Cubs edged the Cardinals 6-5 in 10 innings in St. Louis. Willson Contreras plated the game-winning run with an RBI single in the top of the 10th. Contreras had two hits and three RBI for the North-Siders who improved to 28-and-45. David Robertson got his second win in relief. The Cubs return home to start a series with the Reds tomorrow night.
The Cardinals will host the Miami Marlins tonight. Adam Wainwright will start for the Cards.
The Cubs Jason Heyward has missed two straight games with knee soreness. Manager David Ross said they are “trying to give him a day or two of rest” as the outfielder deals with the soreness issue.
Mississippi defeated the Oklahoma Sooners 4-2 to win their first ever College World Series. Ole Miss finished the Cinderella story after being one of the final four teams selected to the NCAA Tournament.
For the third time in franchise history the Colorado Avalanche are Stanley Cup champions. The Avalanche finished off the two-time defending champions, the Lightning in Game Six with a 2-1 win in Tampa. This is the Avalanche’s first championship since 2001.
The Chicago Sky edged the Minnesota Lynx 88-85 at home. The Sky have rattled off three straight wins to improve to 13 and 5 and will host the Connecticut Sun on Wednesday afternoon.
In Gee Chun walked away with a one-shot victory at the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship. Chun broke the course record and equaled the lowest opening round in Women’s PGA Championship history.
Over in the men’s PGA, Xander Schauffele won the Travelers Championship at TPC River Highlands.
Chase Elliot is the winner of the NASCAR Ally 400 at Nashville Superspeedway. Next race is Sunday at Road America in Wisconsin.
In NFL news, The Chicago Bears finalized a four-year rookie deal with their top draft pick cornerback Kyler Gordon. The Bears took Gordon as their top pick in the second round of the NFL Draft after he played with the Washington Huskies.
