A Peru police officer shot and wounded a dog after it charged at him. Police Chief Robert Pyszka says the officer fired his gun out of fear. He was not bitten.

The incident happened in the 700 block of 12th St. Monday afternoon. Pyszka says police were called for what was believed to be a black pit bull running loose. He also says there were some complainants including a 96-year old man who said the dog charged at him. And another person who said the dog scratched a car when it jumped onto it.

The dog was taken to a veterinary clinic and later released. Pyszka says no charges have been filed. But police are looking for residents with security camera footage that was taken from 7 am to 1:20 pm in the area.
