The White Sox survived a late rally from the Blue Jays in an 8-7 win at Guaranteed Rate Field. Cavan Biggio hit a two-run home run in the top of the ninth to make it a one run game before Joe Kelly took out the final two batters to earn the save. Lance Lynn picked up his first win of the season after giving up three earned runs and two unearned runs in five innings, and Josh Harrison, Luis Robert, and Andrew Vaughn all went deep in the win.
The White Sox placed third baseman Yoan Moncada on the 10-day injured list yesterday after he injured his hamstring on Friday. The good news for the South-Siders is that shortstop Tim Anderson made his return to the lineup against Toronto yesterday.
The Cubs got ransacked by the Pirates in a 12-1 loss at PNC Park. Caleb Kilian had another rough start, giving up five earned runs and two unearned runs in two-and-a-third innings to get tagged with his second loss. Ian Happ was North-Siders lone bright spot in the loss, going two-for-three with a double and the team’s only RBI. The Cubs drop to 25-and-42, and will send Matt Swarmer to the hill against the Pirates tonight.
The Cubs recalled outfielder Nelson Velazquez from Triple-A Iowa and optioned pitcher Adrian Sampson.
The Cardinals were held to just three hits in a 2-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers at American Family Field. Miles Mikolas was strong on the mound despite being charged with the loss, giving up just two runs in six-and-a-third innings. Juan Yepez had two hits in the losing effort, including the Cards only extra base hit. St. Louis is now a game back of Milwaukee for first place in the NL Central with a 38-and-31 record.
The Cardinals placed outfielder Tyler O’Neill on the 10-day IL yesterday after he strained his hamstring in Sunday’s loss to the Boston Red Sox.
The Notre Dame Fighting Irish take on Texas A&M in an elimination game at the College World Series today. After beating Texas in round one, Notre Dame lost to Oklahoma in the second round on Sunday 6-2. A loss would end their season in the double-elimination bracket, while a win would give them another game against the Sooners tomorrow. Notre Dame would have to beat Oklahoma twice in order to make it to the Finals.
The Lightning are striking back on home ice. Tampa Bay crushed the Avalanche 6-2 in Game Three of the Stanley Cup Final. The Lightning blew the game open with a four-goal second period and had six different skaters light the lamp in the victory. Tampa Bay cut the series deficit to 2-1 after getting its first win in the best-of-seven set. The teams are set to meet for Game Four on Wednesday night in Tampa.
The Chicago Sky take on the Las Vegas Aces in a road contest at Michelob Ultra Arena. The Sky are coming off an 89-87 loss to the Indiana Fever on Sunday, but they remain in third place in the WNBA with a 10-and-5 record. Las Vegas owns the league’s best mark at 13-and-2.
The NBA is announcing the schedule for this year’s Summer League. The 11-day competition will get underway on July 7th and two teams will meet in the Championship Game on July 17th. It’s the 17th annual Summer League as all 30 NBA teams will play five games each at multiple locations in Las Vegas.
