Injuries are forcing the White Sox to mix up their bullpen.  Closer Liam Hendriks was placed on the 15 day injured list yesterday as he deals with a right forearm strain that he suffered in a game against the Rangers last Friday.   In a corresponding move, the Southsiders activated reliever Joe Kelly from the IL.  Kelly tossed a scoreless inning in his return to the team yesterday.

The Cubs pitching staff got battered around by the Padres in a 12-5 loss at Wrigley Field.  The Cubs led by five entering the sixth inning before giving up ten runs over the next two innings.  Scott Effross was charged with the loss out of the bullpen after Kyle Hendricks gave up one run in five innings.  Willson Contreras hit two home runs and drove in three in the losing effort.  The Cubs are on an eight-game losing streak, and are now 23 and 38 . Tonight the North-Siders  send Caleb Kilian to the mound against San Diego.

The St. Louis Cardinals took the first game of their doubleheader with the Pirates 3-1 at Busch Stadium.  Paul Goldschmidt hit a two-run home run in the bottom of the third inning and drove in another run in the fourth.  Matthew Liberatore earned his second career win after tossing five shutout innings, and Giovanny Gallegos picked up his ninth save.

In game two, the Cardinals earned the sweep over the Pirates with a 9-1 victory.  Miles Mikolas had a no-hitter through eight-and-two-thirds innings and had Cal Mitchell down to his final strike.  Mitchell hit a ground-rule double to break up the no-no, but Mikolas still earned his fifth win of the season.  Paul Goldschmidt hit two home runs and drove in five runs, while Tommy Edman also went deep.  The Cards have won five of six to improve to 37-and-27, and will face Pittsburgh again tonight.
